Angel Beats!

Do you believe in afterlife? If so, it would be interesting to meet people and make friends after dying.

Plot

The story revolves around the young lad Yuzuru Otonashi who doesn't have any memories and woke up somewhere in the grounds of a school. There, he met Yuri Nakamura (aslso called 'Yurippe'), the leader and founder of the Afterlife Battlefront, and was informed that he's already dead and he's now in the afterlife. Yurippe asked him to join their battlefront and fight along with them so he will not be eliminated by God and vanish.  At that time, Yurippe was holding a sniper and was pointing it to a girl whom  they believed as the Angel (Real Name: Kanade Tachibana). However, Otonashi did not believe what Yurippe said and went to the Angel to converse with her. Thinking that the Angel is also tricking him, he asked the Angel to prove to him that he is already dead so he wast stabbed by the angel through his heart. After that, he woke up in the school's infirmary and came across a guy carrying a long axe who also tried to kill him. He lost consciousness after receiving blows from the guy. A few moments later, he came to his consciousness and realized that he's still alive. Shocked by knowing that he can't die, he tried to look for adults in the school but when he tried to enter the principal's office, he fell into a trap and was knocked out (yeah, he lost conciousness again). when he came to, he found himself inside the principal's office with the other members of  Afterlife Battlefront. Believing the Buddhist philosopy that a person might not come back as a person when reborn, they were able to convince Otonashi to join them. They believed that for as long as they oppose the Angel, they'll continue living in that world. Their main goal is to erase the Angel and take over  their world. There were other students and teachers in the school. They make up the majority of the school's population. As Yurippe try to define them, they are like NPC (Non-Player Characters) in a game. They're people that have been in the world since the start.

As the story continues, Otonashi realized that everyone in that world have harsh lives before their death and they were all trying to rebel against God. When he gained all his memories back, he formed new ideals and tries to take his friends to a new direction. He thinks that it would be nice if everyone could be as happy and fulfilled as he was and that they could leave this world together and start anew. The world they're in is actually a sanctuary for young souls. Basically, his friends are all fighting against life's absurdities and were not able to accomplish something they wanted when they were still living. Kanade who knows this fact, on the other hand, wanted to show everyone that their lives were not unreasonable and wanted them to live a fulfilling youth. He realized that their battle against the Kanade is a big misunderstanding. Friendship was formed as they live their lives in that world. Otonashi's feelings for Kanade has also evolved.

Remarks/Comments:

This anime talks about life and fulfillment which I found good. I had a great laugh too. I just love it.  In the end, they faced a great obstacle but they were able to graduate. The last episode must be watched. It really touched me that I even got teary eyes. *sniff*

Danganronpa

Plot:

On the year 2010, Spike Chunsoft has developed and published the video game entitled as Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc in Japan. The game can be played in PSP, iOS and android devices. Basically, Danganronpa: The Animation is the anime adaptation of the video game. The anime takes place at an elite private school that only accepts students with extraordinary and superb talents and skills. In short, they only accept prodigies in different criteria. Makoto Naegi, a normal average student, won the lottery ticket and was selected to attend to the prestigious school. However, upon stepping into the school grounds, he lost consciousness and by the time he woke up, he found himself in a closed room. He saw a note with instructions to proceed to the gymnasium and there, he met 14 other students in the same situation as him. Then, Monokuma or Monobear, a remote controlled teddy bear showed up informing them that they will be living in the school for the rest of their lives. And the only way to graduate and get away, is to kill one of the students without being caught as a culprit. If a dead body has been found, Monokuma holds a class trial in order to identify the murderer. If they were able to tell the real murderer, the murderer will be punished by Monokuma for disrupting the order of the school. That punishment is execution. However, if they accused the wrong person, the murderer will be able to graduate from the school and all of them will be executed by Monokuma. As the story progresses, the number of survivors are reduced.

Remarks/Comments:

The real excitement in the anime occurs every time a dead body is found. Just like in a video game, they are to look for clues and gather evidences in the murder scene to aid them in determining the killer. On the class trial, they're debating and speculating possibilities from their own hypothesis and observations on when, where and how the victim was killed to sequence the events before the murder happened. They give proper reasoning to defend themselves and support their statements. You might conclude that the anime is gruesome or whatever because of  the murder stuffs. The color of their blood is pink, not red, so the it is not so horror and gruesome. I recommend this anime to those who love mysteries and thrills.

For the Team...

Free!

Plot:

The story started with Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana and Nagisa Hazuka who got reunited in Iwatobi High School. The three of them were in the same swimming club in grade school that was about to be torn down. They decided to pay a visit and dig the trophy they’ve won before. Rin Matsuoka, their former teammate who came back from Australia, turns up in order to challenge Haruka to see who's the faster swimmer and won. However, Rin, knowing that Haruka was not in his best state, did not consider his victory. Rin goes to Samezuka Academy but was not initially a member of the school’s swimming club.  Nagisa then, came up with an idea to start a swimming club in order to see Rin on tournaments. They recruited Rei Ryugazaki who was a member of the track and field club. Rei, who has a great liking to beautiful things, decided to join the swimming club after he saw Haruka's beautiful swimming style. A lot of stuffs happened then. Prefectural tournament came but the four of them did not advance to the finals. Gou Matsuoka, manager of Iwatobi High School Swimming Club and also Rin's younger sister, secretly signed them up for the medley relay, giving them the chance to get to regionals. (Note: medley relay is a race swum by four swimmers combining the four different swimming styles: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Freestyle.

Remark/Comments:

As an otaku, I have watched anime about different kinds of sports. This anime is about swimming. To tell you the truth, I don’t have any interest about this sport because I suck at swimming (>.<). The anime was aired in Japan between the 4th of July and 26th of September.I had a great time watching the anime. Aside from those good-looking and hot bishounens (*_*), the story has humor and moral lessons. To all those people who loved swimming, this anime definitely suits you. And guess what? The season 2 has already been announced by the creator on a special talk in Japan. Well, they did left a message at the end of the first season saying "See you next summer". The anime teaches us how important camaraderie is. Teamwork is not just in Basketball, Football or Baseball. It's in every sport.

On the 14th episode of Log Horizon, Regan stated the Spirit Theory:

spirit theory

The mystical energy that animates humans and demi-humans is called the "spirit". Spirit consists of 2 distinct energies, psyche and anima.

v  Psyche is the energy that animates the mind. It affects things such as magic, as well. It is also called MP, magic points. (Psyche = MP)
v  Anima is the energy that animated the body also called as HP, Hit Points (Anima = HP). It is also the energy known as "ki".

When someone is defeated in battle, they can no longer move, but the mind remains healthy. However, the anima and psyche are split, and psyche is trapped in darkness. This is because the information that flows to the mind from the body, which sensed light, has been cut off. Then the dispersal of the body, the anima, begins. This process is called anima - dispersal. Resurrection magic is used on corpses in this state. The anima that has dispersed into the air is gathered and reconstructed. The information required for the reconstruction is derived by calculating backwards from the information left in the corpse. And the healer provides any missing energy.

spirit theory

You could say that information degradation is unavoidable. Naturally, if the body, the anima disperses completely, resurrection becomes impossible. At this point, People of the Land die. But before that point, resurrection magic will works on people of the land.

For an adventurer, once anima dispersal is complete, the body decomposes into particles. And the psyche , the mind, uses its power  to transport the adventurer to the Cathedral, where they revive.
This system is quite similar to that of the demi-humans.

An individual's personality and consciousness are stored inside the psyche as information. Memories, howevever, are also stored within an organ of the body called the brain.  The body, ofcourse, being anima. It's quite possible that memories are damaged or lost during death. The demi-human psyches were warped by the first World Fraction's curse. Even if their memories remain, they may not recognize those memories as their own. In other words, they may recall them as we would a story.

On episode 14 of Log Horizon, Regan approached Shiroe in hope to acquire information and know about the Apocalypse. But since Shiroe does not have any idea about the matter as well, he asked Regan to provide some information about what he know. Regan started the story on the time the first and second world fraction was used.

Regan's Story

Approximately 350 years ago,  the world is said to have been a far more prosperous place than today. It was a pale shadow of the age of gods which has been passed into legend. These four races: human, elves, dwarved, and alvs  lived together during that time.

The alvs, in particular, are magical inventors and the vanguard of a vast magical civilization. However, that power became their downfall. As a race, their reproductive capacity was quite low and their nation was small. They were despised for their exclusive possession of magical technology so other races used their superior numbers to destroy them. Through out the world, the alvs were treated as slaves. Their descendants are the half -alvs. In any event, the alv kingdom was destroyed and then, the six bent princesses, the Luquenje, were born. The six didn't know each other, and they certainly weren't acting in concert. Nonetheless, each of these six alv women swore revenge independently. Some seduced those in power. Some led the remaining alvs. And the world was plunged into chaos once more. But in the end, all six were left on the verge of defeat. And it was then that the 1st World Fraction was used by alvs. But the technologies and principles used remain deeply shrouded in mystery. And the spell brought about the birth of demi-humans.

Until 300 years ago, there were no demi-humans.Repeated war had decreased the population,  leaving the planet  overrun with souls. These souls were used, it seems, in the creation of the demi - humans. The wars with the demi humans pushed humanity to the brink, and the world entered a dark age. Humanity defeated the Luquenje, but there is no doubt their revenge succeeded. To counter the demi-humans , humanity used alv secrets to create new races. The cat people, the wolf fangs, the fox tails, and the robed ones.It seems the precursors were created then, as well.

Even so, humanity was incapable of halting its slide toward the abyss. No matter how many demi-humans one defeated, they simply reincarnated which meant there was no way to defeat them.

Sixty years after the first World Fraction, humanity had fallen nearly completely to the endless wars with demi-humans. And then, a divine summoning spell was used, and messengers of God appeared. This was two hundred forty years ago. The second world fraction. The appearance of the adventurers.

§  In Elder Tale, players are called adventurers, and NPCs are known as People of the Land.

§  Griffons come with usage restrictions, You can only ride them four hours a day.

§  Telepathy can only be used with people on your friend list and you can’t add them unless they're right in front of you

§  Non Player Characters are people in the game that aren't players. They say only predetermined lines, have no personalities, and exist merely to fulfill their game roles.

§  In Elder Tale, Japan is called Yamato. It is divided into 5 major territories. The League of Freedom Cities of Eastal is an alliance of lords that rule Eastern Japan.

§  Elder Tale has one type of currency: gold. The standard cost for the items in a single meal is around 5 gold. A night at a cheap inn is 10 gold. 35 gold a day will suffice to supply life's basic needs. You can earn that much by defeating six goblins and adventurers can put money and items in the guild building's bank, to keep them from being stolen by others. Any one person’s account has limited space.

§  Teacher System a system that lets high-level players make their levels low to play with lower-leveled players. All stats took a huge hit even if only temporarily.

§  A guild is a team comprised of many players. Guilds offer many advantages that parties, which are more provisional, don’t have. For example, a shared vault in the game's bank, and a dedicated communication system. And most important, potential use of guild hall, located here, at the Guild Building. These halls can be purchased or rented, and are divided into several ranks. Normally, you select a hall based on your guild's size.

§  In elder Tale, a quest is a type of mission. There are many types ranging from simply finding missing persons to grand adventures, each with its own unique reward, experience, gold, items and magical knowledge or crafting recipes. The whistle to summon griffons was one of the completion rewards for a huge quest.

§  Combat Guilds/Battle Guilds are guilds whose primary goal is to get stronger.

§  Crafting Guilds are guilds whose time is primarily occupied by amassing items or selling them in town

§  To create, join, or leave a guild, you have to come to the Guild Building. And the bank located in Guild Building. Walking around with lots of money is dangerous, so most players keep the majority of their assets in the bank including valuable belongings. Since a bank is located in every town, you can make a withdrawal anywhere.

§  A zone's owner has the right to control who enters and leaves it. But they can also designate areas to allow or prohibit combat.

§  The Palace of Eternal Ice is a palace with foundations of magical ice created by a dead race of ancient Alvs.

§  Dungeons are places such as abandoned structures, fortresses, shrines, or caves closed-off areas where battles with monsters occur. Many dungeons are home to low-level monsters, while more powerful monsters, like dragons, will sometimes guard treasures there. And since you have to work in a limited area, fighting them is more difficult than in the field. Thus, defeating them requires complex teamwork.

§  In Elder Tale, in addition to adventurers, and people of the land, there are also groups called demi-humans. For example, Goblins. They have limited intelligence, but are hardy and breed quickly. And above all, they're cruel and wicked. An individual goblin is no match for an adventurer of intermediate strength or higher, but their numbers and variety are not to be underestimated. Most of their territory is in the northeast of the island chain.

§  the goblin castle, Seventh Fall, lies deep within the forests of the Ouu territory. Twice a year, the Goblin King is crowned there. Before that happens, players are given a week to slay him.  If they defeat the king before the coronation they can acquire rare items.  Since these items were very powerful and it was an easy event for regular  players. It was one of the game's most popular events.

§  the chief of the area's most powerful clan becomes Goblin King. In other words, by attacking goblin bases around the Ouu area, you could weaken them, thus weakening the Goblin King. And that event had an element that was nearly forgotten because it almost never happened. If players failed to defeat the Goblin  King during that week, the king was crowned. This unified the surrounding clans, making the goblins several times more numerous than they'd previously been.

§  Sahuagin are monsters that live farther south.

§  The Knights of Izumo are heroes born from the people of the land and are said to be stronger than adventurers.  They're ultimate weapon of the humanoid races. There are said to be 13 bands of knights around the world. They've always been involved in battles that determined the world's fate. The knights of Izumo are like guardians of the Yamato Islands.

§  The Fairy King's paper is made from the best ingredients in the game: ink from the Time Dragon's eye.

§  Phoenix is a summoned creature, restricted to characters level 86 and above.

§  The Unified Westland Empire was swallowed up in the history of battles with demi-humans and the Luquenje, and died out. But the Cowen family is distantly related.

§  The Demon Festival of Suzaku Gate is similar to the Return of the GoblinKing. It's an event that occurs in a set of intervals.
